Marsh Flies on the Rapids!

2008-10-02 - Thursday

Today was another excellent day (I'm not going to even bother mentioning how much over budget I'm runnng!)

Today all of the guys, except for two, spent the day white water rafting with Raging Thunder along the Tilley River.

The day started out a bit overcast, but would eventually turn into a mix of sun and fierce down pours.

As we approached our launch, our group of seven was split into two rafts and joined by others to round it out at an even six per boat plus a guide. In my boat we had Matthew, Paul, Nick and myself. We were joined by Mike and Steve from the UK. Our guide was Mauricio from Chile, "Chile" they called him - original, no.

We signed up for the "Extreme" tour, which came with many perks, including first out in the rapids, more extreme rapid passages (ie. Sideways, backwards, surfing the rapids, etc), more water time and also first in to lunch!

Along with what you would expect white water rafting (six rowers and one guide negotiating rocks and rapids down a quickly moving river) there was also ample opportunities to swim certain rapids, jump off of six meter plus rocks, practice raft rolls and even take a trilling ride down a water chute.

To be honest, I can't think of a better way to spend a rainy day... the entire experience was one giant blast... And several mentioned it was the best rafting experience they've ever had! The only downside, if I had to mention one, was the Marsh flies. At home we call them Horse flies... And they are huge... And when they bite, they hurt... A lot. They were everywhere along the rapids and they didn't believe in taking breaks... But then again, neither did we! We had more dead Marsh flies in the bottom of our raft than I could count.

When we had finally arrived back at camp, we had a couple of hours to kill before supper... And the other members of our group who decided not to go white water rafting were not back from their hiking yet... So I decided to catch up on some sleep and grab a quick nap.

When I awoke, Amy and Andrea were well into their preparations for tonights supper: fried bananas and pineapple slices over a bed of rice and chicken tikki massalla.

Several of the group were convinced that we had seen the last of the rain. Paul, I and several others were not so convinced and decided to set tents. Fortunate for us; as shortly after we all crashed for the night, it did begin to rain. And while Paul and I were relatively comfortable in our tent; the sound of several others could be heard (by those not wearing ear plusgs} as they scampered around securing their tarp against the falling rain.
